“Entertaining and interesting. Took me outside my comfort zone.”

“Loved that I had to let creativity flow with no previous notice.
Best way to test writing abilities.”

“Great way to learn and test ourselves.  It promotes learning English.”

“Liked experience of travelling and participating with other writers.”

Thought we’d have to write another essay on serious issues.
Never thought we’d create a story from scratch.”

These were just some of the comments from competitors in the 4th National English Writing Competition which took place in two stages from July to November.  In the first stage, the participants had to send in an argumentative essay on a choice of given subjects.  In October, the finalists were invited to the Ralli Museum in Santiago or the Museum of Contemporary Art in Valdivia, where they had to write a creative story inspired by a sculpture or painting.   In this first year that finals were held out of Santiago, it was pleasing to note that half the finalists came from the regions.

The winners were:

VISIT OF JOSEFINA PINOCHE TO CANADA

ESU Chile winner of the 2010 English Writing Competition

Josefina chatting with His Worship, James A. Watson, Mayor of Ottawa, while Joyce Wright, a past-president of ESU Canada, looks on.

Josefina won the ESU Chile 2010 English Writing Competition. Her prize was a week in Canada. Richard Collingwood-Selby, ESU Chile, and John Wright arranged a program for her which included 4 days in Ottawa as houseguest of the Wrights and 3 days in Toronto, with a side trip to Niagara Falls.

While in Ottawa, Josefina toured the city, met the Mayor and Councillor Peter Hume, visited the Museum of Civilization and the National Art Gallery, saw a Cirque du Soleil performance, checked out the shopping centres and the Byward Market, and spent her last evening at a Jazz Fest concert which, by a fortuitous piece of timing, featured one of her favourite groups.

Her command of English is excellent so it was no surprise that she had won the writing competition. Josefina was a pleasure to host and an excellent ambassador for Chile and ESU Chile.
