Students get a buzz at the Second Providencia Spelling Bee

October 31st, 2017

After months of waiting, the time finally came for 50 students from Providencia’s public schools to take part in the Second Providencia Spelling Bee. As with last year’s inaugural event, the competition was held at the spectacular Fundación Cultural de Providencia, a site of historical interest and the perfect setting for this event.

With a year of experience under their belts, the students and teachers from the five participating schools knew exactly what to expect. This was reflected by a marked improvement in the students’ performance, as the official word list was exhausted in every category, forcing the judges to refer to the dreaded ‘emergency words’.

The day started with a welcome speech from the Director of Education for Providencia, José Palma Vega, who reflected on the importance of English and cited ESU Chile’s involvement with the local public schools as a stepping stone towards the world of opportunities that is provided by the ability to speak English.

The event got underway with the 1st and 2nd graders, who amazed the audience with their ability to spell and pronounce in English. This set the tone for an entertaining day of spelling, with the students desperate to land the coveted first place and help their school to win the Spelling Bee Cup.

In the end, the cup was awarded to the emblematic Liceo 7 de Niñas, whose students showed that public education is alive and well in Providencia with a superb team display. However, winning or losing was only distraction from the main objective of the day: giving the students the opportunity and confidence to stand in front of a crowd and speak in English.

Thanks go to the Corporación de Desarrollo Social de Providencia and Colegio Providencia for their help in organizing this event, an event which we hope will be repeated for many years to come.
