Hosted by His Excellence Jon Benjamin, the ESU Chile’s annual fund-raising ‘With Great Pleasure,’ was a tremendous success. A near-capacity audience thoroughly enjoyed the performances in a show which endeavoured to cater to all tastes. Whilst the purpose of the evening was to entertain, the ESU took this opportunity, with heartfelt words delivered by Richard Collingwood-Selby, to offer recognition of the work of the late Nigel Blackburn.
The event got underway with a speech from the winner of the Public Speaking Competition and later in the show, the guests enjoyed a recital from the Poetry competition’s winner. Showcasing the work of the organisation, allowed the audience to appreciate the high standards achieved in ESU events.
In the spirit of variety shows, guests were entertained with a blend of music, acting and singing. From poignant monologues to comedy playing on the difficulties of translation, the thespians displayed their talents whilst the musical offerings ranged from classical chamber music to more up-to-date jazz and songs. A further surprise for the audience came in the form of a magician who promised to reveal some of his secrets. It is noteworthy that all of the performers had connections within the British Community.
Upon arrival, guests were greeted with a cocktail and the sound of live jazz. After the show, there were further opportunities to mingle and to get to know people as well as enjoy the delicious canapés, washed down with a variety of liquid refreshment. Whilst the evening’s entertainment had been organised by volunteers, the ESU Chile is also indebted to the support of its sponsors without whom the event would not have been possible.
