2016 Public Speaking Competition

The 12th annual Public Speaking Competition took place on Saturday, April 23rd. The event was generously hosted by The Grange School and saw 45 students participate from 25 schools. As with previous versions of the event, there was a strong showing from the regions with schools from as far as Antofagasta and Valdivia making the trip to Santiago to take part.

Following a warm welcome from ESU Chile’s Chairman, Alan Mackenzie, the morning session saw the students divided into 4 heats. Each heat was presided over by a team of 6 judges, who had the unenviable task of selecting 2 winners for the afternoon’s semi-finals. This year’s competition was based on the theme “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any”, which produced a wide variety of interesting speeches.

After plenty of debate between the judges in each heat, the following students were selected to deliver an impromptu speech in the afternoon session:

Consuelo Carrasco – Colegio Cumbres
Sebastián Mingo – Colegio Cumbres
Minhye Cho – St. Margaret’s School
Molly Simms – Lincoln International Academy
Francisca Retamal – The Grange School
Nicolás Guerra Hoffman – Colegio Everest
Sebastián Hood – Windsor School
Hugo Ortiz – Colegio Cumbres

Despite their nerves, the semi-finalists delivered a series of engaging and entertaining speeches, leaving the panel of 5 judges with the difficult task of choosing four finalists. Led by Chairperson Jane Chambers, the judges finally made their decision, with Consuelo Carrasco, Nicolás Guerra, Sebastián Hood and Francisca Retamal advancing to the final.

The level of all of the speeches in the final was as impressive as ever, with both entertaining content and powerful delivery. However, in the end the judges ruled Sebastián Hood the worthy winner of this year’s competition with his speech “You before them”.

Sebastián will now travel to London to represent Chile at the International Public Speaking Competition. ESU Chile wishes him the best of luck and hopes that he enjoys this fantastic opportunity.

ESU Chile would also like to thank all of the judges, teachers, students and other volunteers for helping ensure yet another successful version of the Public Speaking Competition.
