The Spelling Bee is a contest was created for municipal schools with the hope to motivate their students to develop their oracy skills in English, with a long term goal of incorporating them into our other events.
The first competition of this kind was the 2016 Providencia Spelling Bee, organized in collaboration with Colegio Providencia. Such was the success of the competition that the following years it also took place in Santiago Centro and Las Condes.
This year we are expanding the competition to all our Member Schools as a first step towards public speaking. The competition involves students from 1st to 8th grade, who must successfully spell a series of words taken from the national curriculum for English. The competition is divided in 4 categories (1st and 2nd grade, 3rd and 4th grade, 5th and 6th grade, and 7th and 8th grade). Each school is represented by two students in every category, selected from an internal spelling bee hosted by each school.
Through this competition, ESU Chile hopes to motivate all students to develop their oracy skills from an early age.
