DEBATE COMPETITION 2022 SEMIFINALS & FINALS
Held at Villa María Academy, November 19th, 2022
It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Debating is serious business. It involves research, rigour, eloquence, creativity, stamina, sacrifice, as well as magnaminity in victory & wisdom in defeat. It’s a truth less universally acknowledged that it’s serious fun.
Observing ESU’s motto of “Discovering Voices” we should feel proudest of the following: we provide a milieu where our students can learn to rely on their abilities and their team’s; where they can be challenged intellectually, sometimes relentlessly, by the same person they’ll go with later to grab something to eat and tease each other on their performance earlier that day. English language, thus, becomes ingrained into their lives.
Whomever attended our Debate Competition’s semifinals and finals on Saturday November 19th, was witness to an impressive display of intelligence, passion and the truest respect for the opposing team. Our semifinals came after 3 dates in which 9 teams debated each other until they were whittled down to the last 4: Colegio Cumbres, Saint George’s College, Santiago College and our hosts Villa María Academy.
On the day of the finals, the matches and their results were the following:
Congratulations to the Villa María Academy Debate Team! They’d arrived to the semifinals as the only unbeaten team of the competition. On this day they faced a very tough challenge from the Cumbres and Santiago College teams, who proved themselves worthy contenders for the crown, as well as St. George’s, who came in third after they won the corresponding deciding match.
We’d like to thank our judges throughout the competition, who did a tremendous job and earned the respect of all teams through the quality of their judging and feedback.
